Mandela Day: A reminder of the power of education

Today’s Google doodle is a tribute to Nelson Mandela and a reminder of the power of education in the world at large. July 18th, Nelson Mandela’s birthday, has been declared Mandela Day by the UN in honour of the anti-apartheid hero.

Mandela Day celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world. And the key to transforming the world is ‘education’.

In the South African philanthropist’s own words, “the power of education extends beyond the development of skills we need for economic success. It can contribute to nation-building and reconciliation.” This power, when harnessed optimally, can serve as a most compelling argument against inequality, injustice and discrimination, the evils Mandela strove against for the better part of his life.

This essential cause stands at the heart of Balutsav’s efforts to empower children and, consequently, society as a whole. Balutsav’s endeavour to take education to all children mirrors the philosophy of this advocate of peace, education and equality.

Let us partake in this process of turning this tool, education, into a weapon we can use to change the world we live in.
