People living in urban areas, and children in particular, were reliant on technology to attend online classes during the lockdown. However, many rural children struggled due to the lack of access to digital devices and poor internet networks.
Over the years, NGOs have advocated for many good causes but over time their work showcased an image of poverty, sadness, and pity. This representation of multiple problems in India invites commiseration from the global as well as local audiences. However, there are a few NGOs who are taking a novel approach to dealing with serious problems, instead of banking on poverty selling they work towards creating a positive narrative.

Meet Ramesh Balasundaram and Binu Ramesh, founders and leaders of the NGO BalUtsav, headquartered in Bangalore, India. BalUtsav helps to bring life-changing education to children living in India, thus facilitating learning for the entire life cycle: from childhood to livelihood. They work in government schools in 5 states in India and impact over 800,000 students.

Giving up successful corporate careers to make a positive impact in the social development space is something that is harder than one would imagine. However, Binu Verma and Ramesh Balasundaram did just that due to their shared passion to develop solutions that could bring a grassroot-level impact.
Its celebratory approach to redefining government school education led them to conceive flagship programs like I-shaala which focuses on digital innovation in classrooms and the Sampoorna shaala which focuses on revitalising government schools.
A former consultant of the Karnataka Knowledge Commission and Bal Utsav founder Ramesh Balasundaram said that the pandemic had presented them an opportunity to introduce digital learning in schools easier with the education system being crippled.
Education -based NGO Bal Utsav has been aiming at replicating its flagship programme iShaala in Chennai, starting with Government Model Higher Secondary School at Saidapet. Bal Utsav, which began its iShaala projects in Karnataka, is also lookingto execute its 360 -degree revitalisation programme in over 400 schools in the state.
